The Center for Climate Justice
Promote justice by empowering communities to lead climate action and shape an equitable future for all.

The Center for Climate Justice (CCJ) emerges as our bold response to this reality. Building on the CERTA Foundation’s expertise in law, innovation, and advocacy, CCJ is a dedicated hub for advancing inclusive, rights-based climate action rooted in equity, justice, and sustainability. We believe climate solutions cannot be imported or imposed; they must be community-driven, informed by lived experience, and grounded in local wisdom and scientific knowledge.
“Climate justice is not only about environmental protection but also about human rights, intergenerational equity, and global solidarity.”
- African Union

The Center for Climate Justice (CCJ), an initiative of the Certa Foundation, is a bold response to the climate crisis through the lens of equity, justice, and community leadership.
We believe that climate action must be intersectional. That means centering women’s rights, grassroots innovation, and human rights as the foundation of every solution. In Rwanda and across Africa, climate change disproportionately impacts women and marginalized communities, yet these same groups are often excluded from shaping the solutions. We’re changing that.
Our work is underpinned by the following SDGs
OUR MISSION
To work hand-in-hand with frontline communities to amplify their voices, invest in their solutions, and advocate for policies that protect both people and the planet.

OUR APPROACH
We collaborate with communities, grassroots organizations, researchers, and policymakers to address the deep-rooted connections between:

Climate Change & Poverty

Gender & Inequality

Displacement & Access to Resources
Our Strategic Pillars
Strategic Climate Litigation
We use legal action to challenge policies and practices that harm people and the planet. Our litigation work is rights-based, tackling systemic issues such as environmental degradation, displacement, inequality, and the erosion of biodiversity.
Capacity Building & Public Awareness
Empowered communities are resilient communities. We deliver training, civic education, and public campaigns that equip women, youth, and local leaders to take the lead in climate action.
Policy Advocacy & Research
We bridge local realities with policy change. Through cutting-edge research and grassroots-informed advocacy, we push for evidence-based, inclusive laws and policies that reflect the voices of those most affected.
Climate Diplomacy
We engage in regional and international climate diplomacy to ensure that the voices of African communities, especially women, youth, and Indigenous peoples are represented in global climate negotiations. Through coalition-building, strategic partnerships, and participation in multilateral forums, we advocate for just climate financing, technology transfer, and policies that reflect the unique realities of the Global South.
