On 29th September, the Center for Law and Innovation and the Global Network of Internet and Society Research Centers - Secretariat (NoC), in partnership with Meta and Africa Digital Rights Hub, held the “Regulators Workshop: Practical AI Governance Training for Regulators” ahead of the main Africa AI Stakeholder Meeting.
The workshop brought together regulators from over ten African countries for an interactive training on practical approaches to AI governance. Opened by keynote speaker Dr. Arnold Kavaarpuo, Executive Director and Commissioner of the Data Protection Commission, Ghana, the workshop offered insights into strengthening institutional readiness and regulatory coordination in the face of emerging AI use cases.
Dr. Kavaarpuo urged regulators to “lead Africa’s AI trajectory rather than react to it,” emphasizing proactive and collaborative leadership. He outlined three key imperatives:
- Developing supervisory plans for emerging AI use cases;
- Establishing baseline controls for AI deployers;
- Strengthening peer collaboration among regulatory institutions.
Led by Dr. Ololade Shyllon, Ms. Teki Akuetteh, Ms. Mercy King’Ori, and Mr. Ridwan Oloyede, the workshop underscored the importance of building coherent, adaptive, and collaborative AI governance systems that enable innovation while safeguarding ethical and accountable AI deployment across Africa.
