National Workshop on Gender and Climate Change
From july 31st, The center for Justice and Advocacy and the center for law and innovation’s climate lab got the privilege to participate in the national workshop on Gender and climate change with the theme, “ Addressing Gender and Climate Change in Rwanda: Networking for Gender-Climate Change Responsive Actions” organized by WWCCN, GIZ NDC-CD Project, Ministry of Environment (MoE), Kvinna till Kvinna
This event brought together key stakeholders to explore and discuss strategies for integrating gender perspectives into climate action. Dr. Pascal Lopez from GIZ highlighted international frameworks like the Lima Work Programme on Gender and the Gender Action Plan, focusing on gender-responsive climate policies and their implementation challenges.
Olive Byukusenge from the Ministry of Environment shared Rwanda's advancements in gender-responsive climate policies and expectations for COP29, emphasizing the need for increased support and partnerships.
Annet Mukiga from Kvinna till Kvinna presented on the specific challenges faced by women in Rwanda due to climate change, including land scarcity and environmental degradation.
Action-aid emphasized the severe impact of climate change on women, calling for climate justice and enhanced support for smallholder farmers and rural women. The session also highlighted the importance of promoting agro-ecology and energy-efficient technologies.
Vuningoma Faustin from the Rwanda Climate Change Development Network discussed the necessity of clear networking strategies and strong leadership in driving gender-inclusive climate actions.
The workshop concluded with a call for collaborative efforts to develop gender-responsive climate solutions, ensuring that policies and actions benefit all members of society, especially women.
Through this workshop, the Center for Justice and Advocacy and the Center for Law and Innovation are committed to advancing gender-sensitive approaches to climate change, contributing to a more resilient and equitable future for all.
