On 28th July, Green Legacy Nigeria, in partnership with the Center for Climate Justice at Certa Foundation, successfully hosted the Kano Climate Justice Summit, Nigeria Country Insight in Kano State.

Held under the theme “Advancing Pan-African Climate Justice through Local Action & Representation,” the summit brought together over 120 delegates, including policymakers, development partners, civil society leaders, and youth representatives, to explore locally-driven approaches to climate resilience, inclusive leadership, and environmental governance.

The summit served as a platform for strategic dialogue on the role of communities in climate policy development and the importance of aligning national and subnational responses with Africa’s unique climate needs and socio-economic realities. It highlighted the growing significance of intersectional leadership, grassroots innovation, and equitable energy transitions in advancing climate justice on the continent.

The next day, on 29th July was the official launch of the Kano State Climate Change Policy, representing a major milestone in subnational climate governance in Nigeria. The policy underscores Kano’s commitment to building sustainable, climate-resilient systems that prioritize justice, inclusion, and long-term development.

Participants engaged in thematic sessions focusing on access to clean energy, the role of youth and women in climate leadership, biodiversity protection, forest preservation, and climate education. Discussions emphasized the need for integrated, context-specific policies, improved community engagement, and capacity strengthening at all levels of governance.

The summit reaffirmed the importance of localized, African-led climate action and encouraged continued regional collaboration to accelerate progress toward a just and sustainable future. It also set the stage for further knowledge exchange at the upcoming 2025 Sustainability Summit in Nairobi, where Kano’s policy will be shared as a best-practice model.

We extend our appreciation to all partners and participants who contributed to the success of the Kano Climate Justice Summit 2025 and look forward to continued collaboration in advancing climate justice across the continent.
