Certa Foundation was delighted to participate in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Kigali 2025, a global convening organized by our partners at GSMA. The conference brought together leaders in technology, policy, and innovation to shape Africa’s digital future.

In his keynote address, H.E. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, reminded the participants of the transformative power of technology to connect people, advance commerce, and empower communities. He emphasized that innovation can emerge anywhere and from anyone, highlighting the importance of ensuring digital tools and skills reach all citizens, a message that resonated throughout the conference.

Our African Director, Isobel Afful - Mensah, contributed to the discussions by moderating the session “Reshaping Climate Finance: Unlocking Carbon Market Solutions.” The panel featured experts, including Bernadin Bavuge, Environmental Specialist at the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA); Rahab Kagwanja, COO at ATEC; Ali Bosir, Head of Research and Innovation at Telesom Group; and Isaac Newton Acquah, Pan-African Innovation Strategist. Together, they explored how digital technologies and policy frameworks can make carbon markets more inclusive, transparent, and credible.

Panelists shared practical insights on how tools like dMRV platforms, blockchain, and IoT devices can ensure carbon markets are verifiable and accessible. Rahab Kagwanja highlighted ATEC’s clean-cooking programs, which help rural women earn incentives, such as airtime, when they switch from traditional cooking fuels. These programs not only generate carbon credits but also reduce health risks, empower women economically, and strengthen rural livelihoods.

The discussion also highlighted that technology alone is not enough. Building credible carbon markets requires investments in capacity, connectivity, open data platforms, and digital ID systems for rural producers. Carbon credits, when applied thoughtfully, can serve as tools for broader development, creating livelihoods, linking communities to wider economies, and fostering financial inclusion.

MWC showed just how much digital innovation and smart policy can transform Africa. Together with GSMA, we are excited to support the ecosystem and champion inclusive, technology-driven solutions that connect communities and create opportunities across the continent.
